Overview

An automatic number plate recognition progressive web app built for South African plate formats, returning a read fast enough to use at a moving boom.

The problem

Generic ANPR struggles with South African plates — provincial formats, separators that matter, and the glare of a Highveld afternoon. Getting a wrong read is worse than getting no read.

How we approached it

Format-aware recognition that preserves the source separator rather than stripping it, tuned for speed on a mid-range handset, wrapped in an installable PWA so a guard can use it without an app store.

Where it stands

A scanner that reads plates in the format they were issued in, on hardware sites already own.
